What Does GC/MS-Tested Mean? Why Essential Oil Purity Matters

Not every bottle labeled essential oil is necessarily the same.

Where a plant was grown, how it was harvested, how the oil was extracted, how it was stored, and whether anything was added afterward can all affect the final product.

At Wellness by Ari, essential oils are more than something we add to make a product smell good. They’re carefully selected botanical ingredients that play an important role in the products we create.

That’s why we choose pure essential oils backed by GC/MS testing whenever available.

But what exactly does GC/MS mean—and why does it matter?

What Is GC/MS Testing?

GC/MS stands for Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry.

It sounds complicated, but its purpose is relatively straightforward.

Essential oils are made up of many naturally occurring chemical constituents. GC/MS analysis allows a laboratory to separate many of those constituents and identify them, creating a detailed chemical profile of an essential oil.

Think of it almost like a chemical fingerprint.

Different botanical species have characteristic ranges of naturally occurring compounds. By examining an oil’s GC/MS profile, suppliers and laboratories can evaluate whether its composition is consistent with the essential oil it is supposed to be.

Why Does Essential Oil Purity Matter?

Essential oils are highly concentrated botanical materials.

It can take a substantial amount of plant material to produce a relatively small quantity of essential oil, particularly with certain flowers, woods, and resins.

That makes genuine essential oils valuable—and means sourcing matters.

Depending on the oil and supply chain, quality concerns can include dilution, substitution, degradation, or adulteration with other materials.

We don’t want to choose an essential oil simply because the bottle says 100% pure.”

We want evidence supporting what’s inside.

That’s where analytical testing becomes valuable.

What Can GC/MS Analysis Tell Us?

GC/MS testing can provide information about the individual volatile compounds present in an essential oil and their relative concentrations.

That information can help evaluate:

  • Botanical identity
  • Chemical composition
  • Consistency between batches
  • Whether expected natural constituents are present
  • Potential signs of adulteration or substitution
  • Overall conformity with an expected essential-oil profile

GC/MS isn’t the only factor that determines the quality of an essential oil, and no single laboratory test tells you everything.

But it is an important analytical tool—and one we value when selecting the oils that go into Wellness by Ari products.

Why We Don’t Choose Essential Oils Based on Price Alone

There are cheaper ways to scent a candle, soap, or body product.

That’s not our goal.

The price of genuine essential oils can vary tremendously because the amount of botanical material required to produce them varies tremendously.

Some plants produce essential oil relatively readily. Others require enormous quantities of flowers, leaves, peels, wood, or resin to yield a small amount of oil.

Origin, harvest conditions, extraction method, availability, and quality can also affect price.

When we’re selecting an essential oil, quality comes before finding the cheapest option.

100% Pure” Isn’t a Laboratory Test

Anyone shopping for essential oils has probably seen phrases such as:

Pure.

Therapeutic grade.

Premium.

Natural.

Those words can sound reassuring, but marketing terminology alone doesn’t tell us everything we want to know about an oil.

That’s one reason we value actual testing.

A GC/MS report provides analytical information about the oil’s composition rather than relying solely on what’s printed on the front of the bottle.

For us, that’s an important distinction.

From a Single Essential Oil to a Finished Blend

Choosing beautiful individual oils is only the beginning.

Creating an essential-oil blend requires balance.

Some botanicals are bright and volatile. Others are deep and grounding. Some can dominate a blend with only a small amount.

We carefully formulate our scent profiles so individual essential oils complement one another rather than compete.

You may find bergamot paired with cedarwood, lavender balanced with mint, citrus grounded by frankincense, or herbs softened by woods and resins.

The goal isn’t simply to combine essential oils.

The goal is to create a complete aroma.

Why We Don’t Use Synthetic Fragrance Oils

Synthetic fragrance oils can create extraordinarily strong and persistent scents, and they allow manufacturers to reproduce almost any imaginable fragrance.

But that’s not the direction we chose for Wellness by Ari.

We wanted our scents to begin with real botanicals.

That’s why our products are scented with carefully selected pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance oils.

It means working within the beautiful—and sometimes challenging—limitations of natural aromatic materials.

We think that’s part of what makes our products special.

Does Natural Automatically Mean Safe?

No—and we think transparency requires saying that too.

Essential oils are extremely concentrated substances simply because they come from plants does not mean that unlimited amounts should be used.

Different essential oils have different recommended usage levels and considerations depending on how a product will be used.

Thoughtful formulation matters.

We don’t believe in using more essential oil simply to make something smell stronger. We believe in selecting oils intentionally and using them appropriately for the product we’re creating.

Natural ingredients deserve the same respect and care as any other concentrated ingredient.

The Wellness by Ari Standard

Our ingredient philosophy is simple:

Know what we’re using. Understand why we’re using it. Choose quality over shortcuts.

That’s why we seek essential oils backed by GC/MS analysis whenever available and carefully formulate them into our botanical scent blends.

It’s also why we choose ingredients such as American beeswax for our candles and grass-fed tallow for our skincare.

Each decision is part of the same philosophy.

We don’t want an ingredient list that merely sounds natural.

We want to understand the ingredients behind it.

Transparency You Can Feel Good About

When you pick up a Wellness by Ari product, we want you to know there is intention behind what’s inside.

From sourcing our raw materials to developing our essential-oil blends, we’re constantly asking the same questions:p

What is this ingredient?

Why are we using it?

Does it meet the standard we want for our products?

GC/MS testing is one of the tools that helps us answer those questions when selecting essential oils.

Because for us, quality isn’t something that should exist only on a label.

It should begin with the ingredients themselves.
